Protecting Those Who Spent Their Careers Protecting Others

The Glendale Firefighters Cancer & Mental Health Foundation exists to protect the long-term health and wellbeing of retired Glendale firefighters and their families through cancer screening, early detection, mental health support, education, and access to critical resources.

Our Mission

Health · Prevention · Support

The Glendale Firefighters Cancer and Mental Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Arizona nonprofit corporation organized to improve the health and well being of our retired Glendale firefighters and, through that work, strengthen the community they serve. Firefighters experience repeated occupational exposures and traumatic events during public service. The Foundation will address two principal needs: access to preventative cancer screening for retired firefighters and access to mental health care for active and retired firefighters when insurance, employer programs, or personal resources do not fully cover appropriate care.

TWO PRIORITIES. ONE COMMITMENT.

Focus One

Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

Firefighters experience occupational exposures throughout their careers that can contribute to an increased risk of cancer. The Foundation works to expand access to proactive cancer screening and early detection programs, with a particular focus on retired firefighters who may no longer have access to department sponsored screening programs.

Focus Two

Mental Health & Wellness

The effects of a career in the fire service do not always end when the shift is over. The Foundation supports access to mental health resources, professional treatment, peer support, education, and other programs designed to help retired firefighters and their families navigate the psychological impact of a career in public safety.

Cancer Doesn't Retire When You Do.

Neither should access to early detection and screening.

Active firefighters increasingly have access to occupational health programs and cancer screening through their departments. Retirement can create a gap in that protection at a time when decades of occupational exposure may begin to have lasting health consequences.

One of the Foundation's primary goals is to help bridge that gap by supporting access to appropriate cancer screening and early detection opportunities for retired Glendale firefighters.

Supporting the Person Behind the Uniform

Firefighters routinely experience traumatic events, cumulative stress, loss, and situations that most people will never encounter. The Foundation believes seeking help should be accessible, confidential, and supported throughout retirement.

Foundation efforts may include

  • Access to professional mental health treatment
  • Behavioral health resources
  • Peer support
  • Education and awareness
  • Assistance connecting firefighters and families with appropriate programs
  • Support during significant mental health crises or treatment
